Scoiattoli e tacchini di Gian Paolo Montali
Squirrels and turkeys by Gian Paolo Montali

Squirrels and turkeys - How to win in business with teamwork
- A coach who has won everything there is to win in volleyball transfers his sports-based experience to
companies, explaining that the real competitive advantage is the human resource
- For those who seek books on management and motivational techniques capable of transferring the
winning experiences of other sectors (like sport) to the business world
“It’s possible to teach a turkey to climb to the top of a tree – but for that job it would be better to hire a squirrel”.
With this comment, Gian Paolo Montali often tried to convince the president of his team to overshoot the budget
to buy the last, indispensable player. Sometimes he succeeded – but also realised that (a) there are no all-squirrel
teams and (b) winning with turkeys is far more satisfying. Managers in all companies have to meet the challenge
of finite resources – and turkeys are statistically more numerous than squirrels. The secret of success is therefore
to build a team where the “turkeys” can be motivated, trained and supported to go beyond their limits and
achieve results beyond their own wildest dreams. In this, his first book, one of the winning coaches in Italian
sport puts his experience as a coach at the service of managers in difficulty but also of those who, every day,
have to make that special team - the family – a winner.
GIAN PAOLO MONTALI is one of the coaches who has won most in the history of Italian volleyball. Besides winning
club championships, with the Italian national team he also won two European championships (in 2003 and 2005) and the
silver medal at the Athens Olympics. He is now a member of the Board and of the sports committee of the Juventus football
club.
